Does Your Spouse Know What You Are Doing?
If you are like a significant number of network /MLM marketers, you are probably on a island by yourself. FIGURATIVELY only. Most of the time you are working on your business while your “significant other” really doesn’t understand what and why you are doing what you do. They don’t have your passion. They don’t have your desire to get out of the rat race.
Like most marketers, you got into this great business because you wanted more than your J.O.B. was giving you. You wanted to get away from the day to day B.S. that happens in most workplaces. You desired to earn an income that will never materialize at your current position. You have heard about the income of some of the top earners in the network marketing world and have thought to yourself….that is what I need to earn.
So, you stepped into the world of network/MLM marketing.
Then the reality stepped in. You discovered that network marketing was FAR from a cake walk. Your income the first several months was practically nonexistent. So, you kept learning and doing. And learning and doing. And learning and doing.
After a while, your “significant other” started to ask some pretty pointed questions, such as “where is the money”, “I thought this was going to make us a bunch of money”, “how much is this costing us”, etc, etc.
You probably followed one of two courses of action to respond to these questions. Either you didn’t answer directly or you gave the standard “this is a business and it takes time to get everything running”. Either way, you were probably quite uncomfortable in answering. The answer was the real issue to these questions.
They weren’t asking “why aren’t you making money” they were asking “why are you trying to be different from everyone else around us”.
So, now what?
Basically, you have one decision to make … are you in or are you out?
Yes, building ANY business takes time and effort. There are times when you will feel like chucking the whole thing….but you keep on because you “know” what exists at the end of the rainbow. You know that the business will take off when you reach the right mental state. You know this because the business people that you are associating with have that “made it” have told you “it” is worth the effort.
BUT, what about the questions that you keep getting about “when”?
After you understand that the question is more about why you are not “conforming to the clan” than anything else, you can structure an answer to these questions. The simple version is that you will always be the same as the people that you associate with every day. If you associate with people that make minimum wage, you most likely will stay at that income level.
The other saying — if you want to soar with the eagles, you have to fly with the eagles – is the ONLY answer. Nothing else matters.
So, how do you learn to fly with the eagles? For starters, go to: http://tr.im/emmfor and you will see some of the “eagles” that are in my group. Then you need to follow my example.

Palte,
I think your message will hit home with a lot of people. I remember the first discussions my wife and I had about internet marketing when I jumped in. The fortunate thing is that my wife was in her own MLM, so she understood the model.
But really, the key in your entire post is this “The simple version is that you will always be the same as the people that you associate with every day. If you associate with people that make minimum wage, you most likely will stay at that income level.”
THe more that people relate and follow that mantra, the better off they will be.

Bill,
I am glad someone finally wrote about this point. I have been in network marketing most of my adult life. Then got into internet marketing in June 2008. Finally in Oct 2008, I met Linus. By hanging with him and meeting other’s like him, I am finally starting to “get it”. I now know that I need to be around like-minded people to start seeing what’s at the end of the rainbow and how to get there.
As far as my spouse, you definitely hit the nail on the head. For months after starting internet marketing, you described my husband to the tee. Once he started reading the comments I receive from like-minded people and seeing the results finally develop, he is now supportive and not always asking “where is the money”.
I have 2 suggestions to others in the same situation. Befriend someone like Bill or Linus and you will start to see results if you do the work. And secondly, try and keep your spouse in the loop; let them know what you are doing. You never know if their comment was an answer you were looking for.
Your spouse may not understand everything, but they do pick up on what you are doing.
Thanks again Bill for this great article. Keep up the good work.

Bill,
This article will relate to most of the people I talk to in MLM. My wife will occasionaly hassel me about being on the computer all the time, but she sure loves to spend the money that results from my computer time.
Excellent article.

Bill,
I know where you’re coming from.lol My wife, friends and Family don’t get what I do Online. If I had a dollar for every time they ask me that same question I would be rich.
My wife thinks my computer spits out $$$$ 24/7 ,but reality is that I paid my dues and it’s just like clock work now..
Love this article Bill, thanks for sharing…

Tough tough topic for me right now and this Christmas season. I am in but my wife…..well she is supportive but not in. Makes it hard when it brings financial hardship with it. I have agreed to take a contract job in Jan to bring in some more cash while I continue my business growth which is actually good just not where I need it to be full time.
Ah what a topic

Bill,
That is EXACTLY why I am single!
I’ve come to the conclusion that I will only date women that are Entrepreneurs or that are in the industry.
My commitment to this industry has always been my priority and therefore being in a relationship with someone not supportive has never worked out for me. Great post my friend!

Wow Bill,
This takes me back a to a time when I was engaged. My fiance’ was patient, but not really understanding the way the business worked. It just got to a point were the money was not were it probably should have been and she couldn’t understand why I was hanging in there.
She believed in me, but wasn’t really “in” like I was. I was gonna make it work not matter what. To some people that would seem like financial suicide. To me, it was something I had to succeed in.
Well, I’m so glad I stayed with it and am enjoying the way the business has come together. I credit that to surrounding myself with people like you.
Thanks for the great post Bill.

Great Article Bill. It is all about the belief that you have in yourself about your success. And It can happen only when you associate with the right people and do persistent and consistent action
My Mentor always said that 3/4 of the war is won when you win the battle over yourself and reach a state of harmony. This is a wonderful state to be in where you are not affected by the outside world as you know in your hear that you are going in the right direction
I strongly urge each and every one of you to believe in yourself achieving your goals and do what ever it takes to achieve them. Always remember ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS.
Wishing You All the best and See YOU AT TOP
